This national essay contest gives 9th - 12th grade students the opportunity to compete for awards as they examine religious freedom, its history, current importance, and relevance in their lives. Students must request competition sponsorship from their Social Studies or English teachers. If the student is not taking Social Studies or an English class this semester, students may request sponsorship from a former or upcoming Social Studies or English teacher.
National Security Agency Stokes Educational Scholarship DUE 11/30/09

You must major in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering. Scholarship benefits include: tuition at the college of your choice; reimbursement for required textbooks ($1,500 per year limit); housing and travel entitlements during summer employment (if distance between NSA and the school exceeds 75 miles); year-round salary; and continued employment with NSA after graduation. With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to your course of study. UT Arlington Maverick Promise Program DUE 4/1/09
Website: www.uta.edu/scholarships Graduating Texas seniors who meet the following criteria: (1) are an undergraduate student paying the in-state tuition rate; (2) admitted to UTA by April 1, 2010; (3) applicant has completed and submitted all financial aid application forms by April 1, 2010; (4) applicant has a family income of $65,000 or less; and (5) applicant is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. Through the Maverick Promise, UT Arlington will provide grant assistance to students to cover the cost of tuition and fees to students meeting the criteria above. New freshmen students are eligible for the Maverick Promise for up to 5 years. Students may be eligible for additional funds through loans and the Federal Work Study program to help cover additional educational expenses such as textbooks, and room and board. Students who apply for financial aid after this date and meet the other conditions listed will be awarded grant assistance on a funds available basis.

Essay contest is open to all Austin area college-bound, high school seniors. Applicants must complete an essay on the following topic: "How Has the Recent Recession Impacted the African American Community?" Essays must be original, neither previously published nor secured by copyright. Essays must be between 700 and 750 words in length. Three, typewritten, double-spaced copies must be submitted. Fleet Reserve Association Americanism Essay Contest -- DUE 12/1/09
Students in Grades 7 through 12 are eligible. Must submit an essay in 350 words or less on "What Memorial Day Means to Me." You may download the cover sheet above or via the website: http://www.fra.org (click on About FRA and then Essay Contest). The essay shall be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words. Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members Scholarship -- DUE 2/1/09
African American seniors graduating from a Texas public high school in 2010 with a 3.0 or above average. you may download the application from above or via the website. Completed application and one-page essay must be RECEIVED by February 1, 2010. One-page essay shall be about the applicant's college and career goals, and rationale for TCBSBM choosing them to receive the scholarship. Five $1,000 scholarships will be offered.

Two outstanding seniors from LBJ High School and LASA are eligible as an Endorsed School Candidates. Counselors from LBJ and LASA must endorse candidates by October 1st.
Other interested AISD seniors must request to become a Park Scholarship candidate by completing a Park Scholarship Candidacy Request Form by October 25, 2009. Candidates must be United States citizens (permanent residents are ineligible to apply). Candidates must apply for admission into the university for fall 2010 as first-year students pursuing a bachelor's degree. Park Scholars are selected on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The Park Scholarship is a merit-based award, and financial need is NOT considered.

Students whose graduation date falls between May 2009 and June 2010 and who plan to enter a post-secondary institution within one year following graduation. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 50 hours of service during their senior year of high school and a minimum of 400 hours of service during all years of high school. Service is defined as voluntary participation in activities meant to create positive changes in a community. Some activities, however, do not count as service for this scholarship. National Security Agency Stokes Educational Scholarship -- DUE 11/30/09 Website: www.nsa.gov/careers/opportunities_4_u/students/stokes.shtml Graduating high school seniors with at least 1600 SAT (1100 Critical Reading and Math, 500 in Writing) or 25 ACT; demonstrated leadership abilities; U.S. citizen; at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;and be eligible to be granted a security clearance. You must major in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering. Scholarship benefits include: tuition at the college of your choice; reimbursement for required textbooks ($1,500 per year limit); housing and travel entitlements during summer employment (if distance between NSA and the school exceeds 75 miles); year-round salary; and continued employment with NSA after graduation. With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to your course of study. If you are selected as a program participant, you are required to work for NSA after your college graduation for at least one-and-one-half times the length of study. The Being an American Essay Contest is open to all U.S. citizens or legal residents who are students in grades 9-12 attending public, private, religious, and charter schools but who are no older than 19 as the end of the contest period (December 1, 2009). Students attending school in Texas (regardless of their state of residence) are eligible. To enter the contest you must compose an original essay on the topic "Being an American: Explore the Values that Unite Us." In your essay you must answer the question: "What civic value do you believe is the most important to being an American? Trace the enduring importance of this value throughout the American story by discussing: a Founding document that reflects this value; a figure from American history who embodies this value; and examples of how you have and/or could put this value into practice. Each candidate must submit a complete application for admission to the Boston University College of Engineering, along with the BU Common Application Supplement and a 500-word essay no later than December 1st. On the BU Common Application Supplement, indicate you are an Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship applicant by typing the letters "EN" in the box marked "Office Use Only" at the bottom on page one. Fleet Reserve Association Americanism Essay Contest -- DUE 12/1/09
Students in Grades 7 through 12 are eligible. Must submit an essay in 350 words or less on "What Memorial Day Means to Me." You may download the cover sheet above or via the website: http://www.fra.org (click on About FRA and then Essay Contest). The essay shall be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words. The essay shall be legibly written or typed on one side of the paper. Each entry MUST BE accompanied by the Contest Cover Sheet (attached above). The Opportunity Award is designed to provide scholarships for first year freshmen with outstanding high school records. Selection is based on an applicant's high school academic record, character, activities, leadership ability, SAT or ACT scores and in some cases, evidence of financial need. Stipends for these awards generally range from $100 to $12,500 per year. Applicants must be entering freshmen who have not attended another college or university. Applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for need-based awards. Entering freshmen can apply online at: https://www.applytexas.org. See your counselor for the campuses' due date in order to be considered for this nomination. One senior per school may be nominated. Nominees should be in the top 20% of their class and demonstrate leadership. If the campus has a candidate with strong leadership qualities that is not in the top 20% of the class, he/she can still be nominated. Nominations are not based on financial need and U.S. citizenship is NOT a requirement. Winners of the award must attend a U.S. college or university. Home-schooled students are not eligible. Entries must have all signatures and be POSTMARKED by December 4th. Nominees should complete the online nomination form by going to www.applyists.net and following the onscreen instructions. The access key is PLA. Students are assigned by the computer, an Applicant Identification Number called AIN. It is important to write down this number as you will need this number to return and make changes/additions to your nomination form. Once the online Nomination Form is completed, PRINT OUT the form and give the form to your counselor, teacher or principal. The principal is required to write a recommendation and insert this information on page 4 of the Nomination Form as well as sign the form in the space provided. Chamber Launches CollegeReadyAustin.com As part of the Chamber's Education and Talent Attraction initiative, 20,010 in 2010, the Austin Chamber of Commerce has launched a new website CollegeReadyAustin.com to promote post-secondary enrollment in the Metro Austin area. The useful and information-packed website contains several features to help guide interested students through the tedious process of finding and applying for the right college or university.
Additionally, the website includes many links to make the application process as easy, pleasant and as unintimidating as possible. A key element to the interactive website includes a user-friendly layout which makes the site easy to navigate and understand. Photos, video and additional resources are also incorporated to help answer questions.
