Recipient will be recognized at the Kreatures Car Club Show on October 31, 2009

  • UT-Dallas -- Eugene McDermott Scholars Award DUE 11/1/09

Graduating seniors with a 1400 or higher on the two part SAT (verbal and math);
2100 or higher on the three part SAT; 32 or higher on the ACT; rank in the top 5%
of their graduating class; have long record of community voluntarism and leadership
in school; have broad and eclectic interests in science, literature, and the arts; and
have the social skills to interact easily with adults as well as peers. The Program
welcomes all majors and is not looking for students with any particular area of interest

  • FIRE's Freedom in Academia Essay Contest DUE 11/6/09

Competition is open to all high school seniors enrolled in an American high school.
Students must go to FIRE's website at www.thefire.org and familiarize yourself
with FIRE and FIRE's issues. Students must click on FIRE's multimedia button
and watch two short videos. Students must then write an essay between 700-1,200
words discussing the videos you have seen and explain how these universities
betrayed the purpose of a university and violated the constitutional guarantee of
free expression. Focus on why such codes and practices are incompatible
with higher education and why free speech is important in our nation's
colleges and universities.

Graduating seniors who are non-South Carolina residents planning to enter
The University of South Carolina and demonstrate extraordinary academic
achievement, superlative leadership qualities, and a commitment to service.
Typical candidates have excellent grades on a strong high school curriculum
and present average SAT scores over 1350 on critical reading and math
sections combined (or ACT composite score of 30).

  • Austin Optimist Club Young Texan/TexAnne Program DUE 11/16/09
Each campus may nominate two worthy junior candidates, one young man and
one young woman. Nominations must be submitted to the Austin Optimist Club
through the counselor. Nominations mailed by students will not be considered.
Nominations must be received by November 16th. Qualifications include any boy
or girl between the ages of 16 and 18 years, inclusive. Must be juniors in high school.
If nomination is based on an unselfish activity or heroic act, the only requirement
is that the youth's age be from 16 to 18 years, inclusive. A boy or girl may be
nominated by a club only once in the administrative year.
First Freedom Student Competition DUE 11/23/09

This national essay contest gives 9th - 12th grade students the opportunity to
compete for awards as they examine religious freedom, its history, current importance,
and relevance in their lives. Students must request competition sponsorship from
their Social Studies or English teachers. If the student is not taking Social Studies
or an English class this semester, students may request sponsorship from a former
or upcoming Social Studies or English teacher.

  • National Security Agency Stokes Educational Scholarship DUE 11/30/09

Graduating high school seniors with at least 1600 SAT (1100 Critical Reading and
Math, 500 in Writing) or 25 ACT; demonstrated leadership abilities; U.S. citizen;
at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;and be eligible to be granted a security clearance.
You must major in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering.
Scholarship benefits include: tuition at the college of your choice; reimbursement
for required textbooks ($1,500 per year limit); housing and travel entitlements
during summer employment (if distance between NSA and the school exceeds
75 miles); year-round salary; and continued employment with NSA after graduation.
With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to
your course of study. If you are selected as a program participant, you are required
to work for NSA after your college graduation for at least one-and-one-half times
the length of study. If you leave NSA employment earlier, you must reimburse
the government for your tuition and book costs.

the level of their true potential but who would be successful with the additional
academic and personal support provided by the Torch Program. 3. Students who
represent a diversity of academic majors, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and
geographic areas. 4. Students who are first-generation college students, and

UTA President's Charter Scholarship--$32,000 over 4 yrs Criteria: 1300 SAT/29 ACT AND High School Top 10% or 3.5 GPA.

UTA Outstanding Freshman Scholarship-$24,000 over 4 years.
Criteria: 1200 SAT/26 ACT AND High School Top 10% or
3.2 GPA.

UTA Freshman Honors Scholarship-$16,000 over 4 yrs.
Criteria: 1100 SAT/24 ACT AND High School Top 20%.

UTA Top 10% Scholarship-$8,000 over 4 years
Criteria: High School Top 10%

UTA Top 50% Scholarship-$16,000 over 4 years
Criteria: 1200 SAT/26 ACT AND High School Top 50%.

All scholarships are renewable for up to four years assuming the
student maintains the required GPA.

at least three credits in two or more courses of career and technical
education. Applicants must also plan to enroll as a full-time student
in an accredited institution of higher learning for the Fall Semester
of 2010 and the Spring Semester of 2011.

  • UT Arlington Maverick Promise Program DUE 4/1/09

Graduating Texas seniors who meet the following criteria: (1) are an
undergraduate student paying the in-state tuition rate; (2) admitted to
UTA by April 1, 2010; (3) applicant has completed and submitted all
financial aid application forms by April 1, 2010; (4) applicant has a family
income of $65,000 or less; and (5) applicant is eligible for a Federal Pell
Grant. Through the Maverick Promise, UT Arlington will provide grant
assistance to students to cover the cost of tuition and fees to students
meeting the criteria above. New freshmen students are eligible for the
Maverick Promise for up to 5 years. Students may be eligible for
additional funds through loans and the Federal Work Study program
to help cover additional educational expenses such as textbooks, and
room and board. Students who apply for financial aid after this date
and meet the other conditions listed will be awarded grant assistance
on a funds available basis.

  • Omega National High School Essay Contest -- DUE 11/16/09


    Essay contest is open to all Austin area college-bound, high school seniors. Applicants
    must complete an essay on the following topic: "How Has the Recent Recession Impacted
    the African American Community?" Essays must be original, neither previously published
    nor secured by copyright. Essays must be between 700 and 750 words in length. Three,
    typewritten, double-spaced copies must be submitted. Please note on the attachment the
    information that must appear on the first page and the order in which it must appear.

  • Fleet Reserve Association Americanism Essay Contest -- DUE 12/1/09



    Students in Grades 7 through 12 are eligible. Must submit an essay in 350 words or less on
    "What Memorial Day Means to Me." You may download the cover sheet above or via the
    website: http://www.fra.org (click on About FRA and then Essay Contest). The essay shall
    be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words. The essay shall be legibly written
    or typed on one side of the paper. Each entry MUST BE accompanied by the Contest Cover

  • Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members Scholarship -- DUE 2/1/09



    African American seniors graduating from a Texas public high school in 2010 with a 3.0 or above
    average. you may download the application from above or via the website. Completed application
    and one-page essay must be RECEIVED by February 1, 2010. One-page essay shall be about the
    applicant's college and career goals, and rationale for TCBSBM choosing them to receive the
    scholarship. Five $1,000 scholarships will be offered.

  • North Carolina State University Park Scholarship -- DUE 10/25/09

    Two outstanding seniors from LBJ High School and LASA are eligible as an
    Endorsed School Candidates. Counselors from LBJ and LASA must endorse
    candidates by October 1st.

    Other interested AISD seniors must request to become a Park Scholarship
    candidate by completing a Park Scholarship Candidacy Request Form by
    October 25, 2009. Candidates must be United States citizens
    (permanent residents are ineligible to apply). Candidates must apply for
    admission into the university for fall 2010 as first-year students pursuing
    a bachelor's degree. Park Scholars are selected on the criteria of scholarship,
    leadership, service and character. The Park Scholarship is a merit-based award,
    and financial need is NOT considered.

  • Horatio Alger National Scholarship and Texas Scholarship Programs
    DUE 10/30/09

    Seniors who will graduate in the spring/summer of 2010 with plans to pursue
    a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution and enter college in the U.S.
    no later than the fall following graduation. Must have involvement in co-curricular
    and community service activities and a minimum GPA of 2.0. Must have critical
    financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred,
    if higher explanation must be provided). Must have U.S. citizenship and be a
    Texas resident (for the Texas State Scholarship Program). Applicants will
    first be considered for the Horatio Alger National Scholarship. If not selected,
    students will be considered for their individual State Scholarship Program.

    Program is open to current high school seniors attending school (or home-schooled) in the
    U.S. anticipating graduation during the academic year in which the application is made.
    Must be a U.S. citizen; U.S. National; U.S. Permanent Resident; Temporary Resident
    (legalization program); Refugee; Asylee; Cuban-Haitian Entrant; or Humanitarian
    Parolee planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution

  • Voice of Democracy - Audio Essay Scholarship for Akins, Austin High, Bowie, Crockett,
    Garza, McCallum & Travis -- DUE 11/1/09

    Open to all high school students (9th-12th) who attend Akins, Austin High, Bowie, Crockett,
    Garza, McCallum and Travis High Schools. Topic: "Does America Still Have Hereos?"
    Completed Official Student Entry Form with appropriate certifications and signatures,
    and record your original 3-5 minute essay on the topic above on a standard cassette tape
    along with a typed copy of your essay.

  • TCU Texas Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Awards -- DUE 11/1/09

    The award is open to any Texas high school student who has started and
    managed a business. Applicants do not have to be seniors. Freshmen,
    sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply as well. The award will
    honor 6 High School Entrepreneurs in the state with a scholarship to
    a university of their choice. If the student attends TCU, the scholarship
    will be doubled.

    Recipient must be pre-university or pre-college females (age 16-20) at the
    time of the application and demonstrate: 1) evidence of active commitment
    to volunteerism, 2) evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, 3) evidence
    of international awareness and 4) evidence of dedication to advancing the
    status of women worldwide. Student can attend the higher learning institution
    of her choice. Scholarship money will be made available to the student for
    her discretion in use toward higher education expenses. You may download
    and print this application above. Completion of the official application,
    verification of current enrollment by a school official and two confidential
    recommendations from adults not related to the applicant, such as teachers,
    school officials or community leaders. The Zonta Club of Austin will
    select TWO senior females from the Central Austin Area to award $1,000
    on the local level. Additionally, one senior female's original application will
    be forwarded to the Zonta District Governor to compete among recipients
    from five states (Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana)
    for another $1,000. An additional $3,000 is available at the International level.

    Students whose graduation date falls between May 2009 and June 2010
    and who plan to enter a post-secondary institution within one year
    following graduation. Applicants must have completed a minimum of
    50 hours of service during their senior year of high school and a
    minimum of 400 hours of service during all years of high school. Service
    is defined as voluntary participation in activities meant to create positive
    changes in a community. Some activities, however, do not count as service
    for this scholarship. Please see the application for specific details about

    YouthLaunch Website. Completed and signed Student Information Form;
    Student Reflection Questions; Student Service Resume (covering all
    4 years of high school); TWO Letters of Recommendation (in sealed
    envelopes) from two adults who know the student well but are not family
    members; and OPTIONAL Printed Materials highlighting the student's
    service. All application packets must be POSTMARKED by
    February 27, 2010. Emailed and faxed submissions will not be accepted.
    Please do not staple or put application materials in presentation folders.
    The YouthLaunch Scholarship Selection Committee will evaluate each
    application based on the following criteria: Impact, Leadership, Personal

    Akins, Anderson, Austin High & Crockett -- DUE 11/13/09
    See your counselor for your campus due date in order to be considered for
    this nomination. Graduating seniors from Akins, Anderson, Austin High,
    and Crockett and Connally High School in Pflugerville are eligible.
    Applicants may be male or female students who will attend college and
    possess qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
    ONLY ONE NOMINATION PER SCHOOL will be accepted.

  • DAR Good Citizens Scholarship -- Balcones Chapter for LBJ, LASA,
    Lanier & Bowie -- DUE 11/15/09
    Graduating seniors enrolled at LBJ, LASA, Lanier and Bowie are eligible.
    United States citizenship is not required. The student selected must have
    the qualities of Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism. See your
    counselor for the application and the campus date in order to be considered
    for this nomination. Only one student per year may be honored as the
    school's DAR Good Citizen.

  • Austin Optimist Club Young Texan/TexAnne Program -- DUE 11/16/09
    Each campus may nominate two worthy junior candidates, one young man and
    one young woman. Nominations must be submitted to the Austin Optimist Club
    through the counselor. Nominations mailed by students will not be considered.
    Nominations must be received by November 16th. Qualifications include any boy
    or girl between the ages of 16 and 18 years, inclusive. Must be juniors in high school.
    If nomination is based on an unselfish activity or heroic act, the only requirement
    is that the youth's age be from 16 to 18 years, inclusive. A boy or girl may be
    nominated by a club only once in the administrative year.

  • Omega National High School Essay Contest -- DUE 11/16/09


    Essay contest is open to all Austin area college-bound, high school seniors. Applicants
    must complete an essay on the following topic: "How Has the Recent Recession Impacted
    the African American Community?" Essays must be original, neither previously published
    nor secured by copyright. Essays must be between 700 and 750 words in length. Three,
    typewritten, double-spaced copies must be submitted. Please note on the attachment the
    information that must appear on the first page and the order in which it must appear.

  • First Freedom Student Competition -- DUE 11/23/09

    This national essay contest gives 9th - 12th grade students the opportunity to
    compete for awards as they examine religious freedom, its history, current importance,
    and relevance in their lives. Students must request competition sponsorship from
    their Social Studies or English teachers. If the student is not taking Social Studies
    or an English class this semester, students may request sponsorship from a former
    or upcoming Social Studies or English teacher.

  • National Security Agency Stokes Educational Scholarship -- DUE 11/30/09

    Graduating high school seniors with at least 1600 SAT (1100 Critical Reading and
    Math, 500 in Writing) or 25 ACT; demonstrated leadership abilities; U.S. citizen;
    at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;and be eligible to be granted a security clearance.
    You must major in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering.
    Scholarship benefits include: tuition at the college of your choice; reimbursement
    for required textbooks ($1,500 per year limit); housing and travel entitlements
    during summer employment (if distance between NSA and the school exceeds
    75 miles); year-round salary; and continued employment with NSA after graduation.
    With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to
    your course of study. If you are selected as a program participant, you are required
    to work for NSA after your college graduation for at least one-and-one-half times
    the length of study. If you leave NSA employment earlier, you must reimburse
    the government for your tuition and book costs.

    The Being an American Essay Contest is open to all U.S. citizens or legal residents who
    are students in grades 9-12 attending public, private, religious, and charter schools but
    who are no older than 19 as the end of the contest period (December 1, 2009). Students
    attending school in Texas (regardless of their state of residence) are eligible. To enter
    the contest you must compose an original essay on the topic "Being an American:
    Explore the Values that Unite Us." In your essay you must answer the question: "What
    civic value do you believe is the most important to being an American? Trace the
    enduring importance of this value throughout the American story by discussing: a
    Founding document that reflects this value; a figure from American history who
    embodies this value; and examples of how you have and/or could put this value into
    practice. Essays may be no longer than 750 words and must be submitted by a teacher
    sponsor by 11:59 pm EST on December 1st via the Being an American
    website (http://www.beinganamerican.org/]. To enter, teachers of eligible students
    must log on to the website and submit the essay that follows the Essay Guidelines
    as detailed in Section III. Only teacher-submitted essays will be accepted and judged.

  • Boston University - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

    Graduating academically gifted students with proven leadership abilities and a strong
    commitment to social justice and community involvement. Print the scholarship
    nomination form and give it to a mentor, teacher or advisor. Each candidate must
    submit a complete application for admission to one of the undergraduate degree
    programs at Boston University together with a completed Nomination Form and
    500-word essay. The application for admission, essay, and nomination
    form must all be SUBMITTED by December 1st. Each candidate must submit a
    500-word essay describing how the following quotation has affected him or her
    personally. Please use specific examples from your own life, while also connecting
    your answer to the quotation and the legacy of Dr. King. Quote: The ultimate test
    of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and the moments of
    convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of
    controversy. Please submit your essay via e-mail to mlkschol@bu.edu as an
    attached Microsoft Word document, Adobe Acrobat, Open Document or
    plain text format (.doc, .pdf, .odt, .rtf, or .txt file-extensions.) For identification
    purposes, please include your name and the words "MLK Essay"
    in the subject line, and type your name and birth date on the essay.
    Submit official results of either the SAT with two SAT Subject Tests, or the
    ACT with Writing Test. For some programs, additional SAT Subject Tests
    may be required. All tests must be taken no later than November. Each Scholar
    must complete a minimum of 100 community service hours each year in
    conjunction with Boston University's Howard Thurman Center.

  • Boston University -- Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship -- DUE 12/1/09

    Graduating seniors with strong math and science backgrounds. Students in the top 10% of
    their class are encouraged to apply. Each candidate must submit a complete application
    for admission to the Boston University College of Engineering, along with the BU
    Common Application Supplement and a 500-word essay no later than December 1st.
    On the BU Common Application Supplement, indicate you are an Alexander Graham
    Bell Scholarship applicant by typing the letters "EN" in the box marked "Office Use
    Only" at the bottom on page one. Submit official results of either the SAT with two
    SAT Subject Tests, or the ACT with Writing Test. For some programs, additional
    SAT Subject Tests may be required. All tests must be taken no later than
    November. Write a 500-word essay about an engineering advance or innovation
    that you feel has had an important impact on society. Your essay should describe
    the advance/innovation and discuss its implications for society and the field of
    engineering. Submit your essay via email to engessay@bu.edu as an attached
    Microsoft Word document (.doc or .rtf extension). Please include your
    name and the words "Bell Essay" in the subject line, and type your name and
    birth date on the essay.

  • Fleet Reserve Association Americanism Essay Contest -- DUE 12/1/09



    Students in Grades 7 through 12 are eligible. Must submit an essay in 350 words or less
    on "What Memorial Day Means to Me." You may download the cover sheet above or
    via the website: http://www.fra.org (click on About FRA and then Essay Contest). The
    essay shall be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words. The essay
    shall be legibly written or typed on one side of the paper. Each entry MUST BE
    accompanied by the Contest Cover Sheet (attached above). Enter the Capital Area
    Branch 201 as the Sponsoring Branch and the address of P.O. Box 723, Austin,
    TX 78767-0723 as the Sponsoring Branch's address. Entries must be POSTMARKED
    no later than December 1st. Students must use the title "What Memorial Day Means
    to Me." Entries without the correct title will automatically be disqualified.

  • Texas A&M Opportunity Awards -- DUE 12/1/09

    The Opportunity Award is designed to provide scholarships for first year freshmen with
    outstanding high school records. Selection is based on an applicant's high school
    academic record, character, activities, leadership ability, SAT or ACT scores and in some
    cases, evidence of financial need. Stipends for these awards generally range from $100 to
    $12,500 per year. Applicants must be entering freshmen who have not attended another
    college or university. Applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student
    Aid (FAFSA) for need-based awards. Entering freshmen can apply online at:
    https://www.applytexas.org. See online application for documentation required.
    Most Opportunity Awards are for one year but some are multi-year awards.

  • Texas A&M Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen -- DUE 12/1/09

    Graduating seniors who demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities are eligible.
    Entering freshmen using the online University of Texas Application for Freshmen
    Scholarships should apply by December 1st of their senior year of high school.

    www.applytexas.org/adappc/commonapp.WBX. On the application, indicate that
    you are applying for Texas Exes Scholarships for Freshmen. Follow ALL
    instructions on the application. Please email any required essays as Word
    attachments, making sure to include your name, EID and name of scholarship
    at the top of the page. One page is the ideal length for all essays. If a letter of
    recommendation, special essay or transcript is required for a specific scholarship,
    be sure to email it to: TexasExesScholarships@alumni.utexas.edu or mail it to the

  • UT Austin - John L. Hern and Marilyn A. Hern -- DUE 12/1/09
    Applicants must have attended Mendez Middle School in Austin, Texas and plan
    to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Freshmen currently enrolled at the
    University of Texas at Austin who meet the criteria may also send a letter of interest.
    Criteria includes: need, academics, extracurricular activities, etc. Interested students
    should complete the Texas Common Application at: www.applytexas.org by
    December 1st. Use your application ID number to access the "Apply for
    Scholarships" option at applytexas.org. A letter of interest should also be submitted
    with the student's name, high school the student is attending, Mendez Middle
    School enrollment documentation, email address, phone number and address. Please
    send the letter of interest to the address above Attn: Hern Scholarship c/o Office
    of Student Financial Services. Award amount varies but is generally a $1,000 minimum.
    This scholarship is funded by Paula Hern and former Mendez Middle School

    to improving the quality of life for others.

    Incoming freshmen may apply for the various competitive scholarships. In addition to a
    scholarship application, freshmen must also be admitted to Texas State no later than
    December 15th in order to be considered for scholarships. You may apply on-line via the
    Texas Common Scholarship Application at www.applytexas.org. Must also submit an
    admission application, official transcript, official SAT or ACT scores, and a Texas State
    Scholarship Application -- including essay topics B and C. Hardcopy scholarship
    applications are no longer used for incoming freshmen. You must submit all documents

    available scholarships. President's Honor Scholarship ($20,000), Texas State

  • Principal's Leadership Award -- DUE 12/4/09

    See your counselor for the campuses' due date in order to be considered for this
    nomination. One senior per school may be nominated. Nominees should be in
    the top 20% of their class and demonstrate leadership. If the campus has a
    candidate with strong leadership qualities that is not in the top 20% of the class,
    he/she can still be nominated. Nominations are not based on financial need and
    U.S. citizenship is NOT a requirement. Winners of the award must attend a
    U.S. college or university. Home-schooled students are not eligible. Entries
    must have all signatures and be POSTMARKED by December 4th. Nominees
    should complete the online nomination form by going to www.applyists.net
    and following the onscreen instructions. The access key is PLA. Students are
    assigned by the computer, an Applicant Identification Number called AIN.
    It is important to write down this number as you will need this number to return
    and make changes/additions to your nomination form. Once the online
    Nomination Form is completed, PRINT OUT the form and give the form to your
    counselor, teacher or principal. The principal is required to write a
    recommendation and insert this information on page 4 of the Nomination Form
    as well as sign the form in the space provided. Three signatures are required
    in spaces provided on Page 4 of the Nomination Form. Items to be mailed and
    postmarked by December 4th. Nomination Form completed with applicant
    information, principal recommendation and signatures of the applicant,
    counselor/teacher and principal; completed Leadership Narrative with student's
    name and address; and $6 Processing Check (from the school) made payable to
    ISTS/Principal's Leadership Award (include the name of the student and high
    school on the check). Do not send materials to NASSP. The Certificate of Merit
    will be mailed after the completed nomination materials are received. An
    official school transcript is no longer required.

Chamber Launches CollegeReadyAustin.com
As part of the Chamber's Education and Talent Attraction initiative, 20,010 in 2010, the Austin Chamber of Commerce has launched a new website CollegeReadyAustin.com to promote post-secondary enrollment in the Metro Austin area. The useful and information-packed website contains several features to help guide interested students through the tedious process of finding and applying for the right college or university.

Additionally, the website includes many links to make the application process as easy, pleasant and as unintimidating as possible. A key element to the interactive website includes a user-friendly layout which makes the site easy to navigate and understand. Photos, video and additional resources are also incorporated to help answer questions.
