UT-Dallas -- Eugene McDermott Scholars Award DUE 11/1/09

Graduating seniors with a 1400 or higher on the two part SAT (verbal and math);
2100 or higher on the three part SAT; 32 or higher on the ACT; rank in the top 5%
of their graduating class; have long record of community voluntarism and leadership
in school; have broad and eclectic interests in science, literature, and the arts; and
have the social skills to interact easily with adults as well as peers. The Program

FIRE's Freedom in Academia Essay Contest DUE 11/6/09

Competition is open to all high school seniors enrolled in an American high school.
Students must go to FIRE's website at www.thefire.org and familiarize yourself
with FIRE and FIRE's issues. Students must click on FIRE's multimedia button
and watch two short videos. Students must then write an essay between 700-1,200
words discussing the videos you have seen and explain how these universities
betrayed the purpose of a university and violated the constitutional guarantee of
free expression. Focus on why such codes and practices are incompatible
with higher education and why free speech is important in our nation's

The University of South Carolina and demonstrate extraordinary academic

Austin Optimist Club Young Texan/TexAnne Program DUE 11/16/09

Each campus may nominate two worthy junior candidates, one young man and
one young woman. Nominations must be submitted to the Austin Optimist Club
through the counselor. Nominations mailed by students will not be considered.
Nominations must be received by November 16th. Qualifications include any boy
or girl between the ages of 16 and 18 years, inclusive. Must be juniors in high school.
If nomination is based on an unselfish activity or heroic act, the only requirement
is that the youth's age be from 16 to 18 years, inclusive. A boy or girl may be
nominated by a club only once in the administrative year.
First Freedom Student Competition DUE 11/23/09

This national essay contest gives 9th - 12th grade students the opportunity to
compete for awards as they examine religious freedom, its history, current importance,
and relevance in their lives. Students must request competition sponsorship from
their Social Studies or English teachers. If the student is not taking Social Studies
or an English class this semester, students may request sponsorship from a former
or upcoming Social Studies or English teacher.

National Security Agency Stokes Educational Scholarship DUE 11/30/09

Graduating high school seniors with at least 1600 SAT (1100 Critical Reading and
Math, 500 in Writing) or 25 ACT; demonstrated leadership abilities; U.S. citizen;
at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;and be eligible to be granted a security clearance.
You must major in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering.
Scholarship benefits include: tuition at the college of your choice; reimbursement
for required textbooks ($1,500 per year limit); housing and travel entitlements
during summer employment (if distance between NSA and the school exceeds
75 miles); year-round salary; and continued employment with NSA after graduation.
With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to
your course of study. If you are selected as a program participant, you are required
to work for NSA after your college graduation for at least one-and-one-half times

UT Arlington Maverick Promise Program DUE 4/1/09

Graduating Texas seniors who meet the following criteria: (1) are an
undergraduate student paying the in-state tuition rate; (2) admitted to
UTA by April 1, 2010; (3) applicant has completed and submitted all
financial aid application forms by April 1, 2010; (4) applicant has a family
income of $65,000 or less; and (5) applicant is eligible for a Federal Pell
Grant. Through the Maverick Promise, UT Arlington will provide grant
assistance to students to cover the cost of tuition and fees to students
meeting the criteria above. New freshmen students are eligible for the
Maverick Promise for up to 5 years. Students may be eligible for
additional funds through loans and the Federal Work Study program
to help cover additional educational expenses such as textbooks, and
room and board. Students who apply for financial aid after this date
and meet the other conditions listed will be awarded grant assistance
on a funds available basis.

Omega National High School Essay Contest -- DUE 11/16/09

Essay contest is open to all Austin area college-bound, high school seniors. Applicants
must complete an essay on the following topic: "How Has the Recent Recession Impacted
the African American Community?" Essays must be original, neither previously published
nor secured by copyright. Essays must be between 700 and 750 words in length. Three,
typewritten, double-spaced copies must be submitted. Please note on the attachment the
information that must appear on the first page and the order in which it must appear.

Fleet Reserve Association Americanism Essay Contest -- DUE 12/1/09

Students in Grades 7 through 12 are eligible. Must submit an essay in 350 words or less on
"What Memorial Day Means to Me." You may download the cover sheet above or via the
website: http://www.fra.org (click on About FRA and then Essay Contest). The essay shall
be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words. The essay shall be legibly written
or typed on one side of the paper. Each entry MUST BE accompanied by the Contest Cover

Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members Scholarship -- DUE 2/1/09

African American seniors graduating from a Texas public high school in 2010 with a 3.0 or above
average. you may download the application from above or via the website. Completed application
and one-page essay must be RECEIVED by February 1, 2010. One-page essay shall be about the
applicant's college and career goals, and rationale for TCBSBM choosing them to receive the
scholarship. Five $1,000 scholarships will be offered.

North Carolina State University Park Scholarship -- DUE 10/25/09

Two outstanding seniors from LBJ High School and LASA are eligible as an
Endorsed School Candidates. Counselors from LBJ and LASA must endorse
candidates by October 1st.

Other interested AISD seniors must request to become a Park Scholarship
candidate by completing a Park Scholarship Candidacy Request Form by
October 25, 2009. Candidates must be United States citizens
(permanent residents are ineligible to apply). Candidates must apply for
admission into the university for fall 2010 as first-year students pursuing
a bachelor's degree. Park Scholars are selected on the criteria of scholarship,
leadership, service and character. The Park Scholarship is a merit-based award,
and financial need is NOT considered.

Horatio Alger National Scholarship and Texas Scholarship Programs

Seniors who will graduate in the spring/summer of 2010 with plans to pursue
a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution and enter college in the U.S.
no later than the fall following graduation. Must have involvement in co-curricular

financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred,
if higher explanation must be provided). Must have U.S. citizenship and be a
Texas resident (for the Texas State Scholarship Program). Applicants will
first be considered for the Horatio Alger National Scholarship. If not selected,
students will be considered for their individual State Scholarship Program.

Garza, McCallum and Travis High Schools. Topic: "Does America Still Have Hereos?"

TCU Texas Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Awards -- DUE 11/1/09

managed a business. Applicants do not have to be seniors. Freshmen,

Recipient must be pre-university or pre-college females (age 16-20) at the
time of the application and demonstrate: 1) evidence of active commitment
to volunteerism, 2) evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, 3) evidence
of international awareness and 4) evidence of dedication to advancing the
status of women worldwide. Student can attend the higher learning institution
of her choice. Scholarship money will be made available to the student for
her discretion in use toward higher education expenses. You may download
and print this application above. Completion of the official application,
verification of current enrollment by a school official and two confidential
recommendations from adults not related to the applicant, such as teachers,
school officials or community leaders. The Zonta Club of Austin will
select TWO senior females from the Central Austin Area to award $1,000
on the local level. Additionally, one senior female's original application will
be forwarded to the Zonta District Governor to compete among recipients
from five states (Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana)
for another $1,000. An additional $3,000 is available at the International level.

Students whose graduation date falls between May 2009 and June 2010
and who plan to enter a post-secondary institution within one year
following graduation. Applicants must have completed a minimum of
50 hours of service during their senior year of high school and a
minimum of 400 hours of service during all years of high school. Service
is defined as voluntary participation in activities meant to create positive
changes in a community. Some activities, however, do not count as service
for this scholarship. Please see the application for specific details about

Austin Optimist Club Young Texan/TexAnne Program -- DUE 11/16/09
Each campus may nominate two worthy junior candidates, one young man and
one young woman. Nominations must be submitted to the Austin Optimist Club
through the counselor. Nominations mailed by students will not be considered.
Nominations must be received by November 16th. Qualifications include any boy
or girl between the ages of 16 and 18 years, inclusive. Must be juniors in high school.
If nomination is based on an unselfish activity or heroic act, the only requirement
is that the youth's age be from 16 to 18 years, inclusive. A boy or girl may be
nominated by a club only once in the administrative year.

Omega National High School Essay Contest -- DUE 11/16/09

Essay contest is open to all Austin area college-bound, high school seniors. Applicants
must complete an essay on the following topic: "How Has the Recent Recession Impacted
the African American Community?" Essays must be original, neither previously published
nor secured by copyright. Essays must be between 700 and 750 words in length. Three,

National Security Agency Stokes Educational Scholarship -- DUE 11/30/09

Scholarship benefits include: tuition at the college of your choice; reimbursement

With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to

the top 20% of their class and demonstrate leadership. If the campus has a
candidate with strong leadership qualities that is not in the top 20% of the class,
he/she can still be nominated. Nominations are not based on financial need and
U.S. citizenship is NOT a requirement. Winners of the award must attend a
U.S. college or university. Home-schooled students are not eligible. Entries
must have all signatures and be POSTMARKED by December 4th. Nominees
should complete the online nomination form by going to www.applyists.net
and following the onscreen instructions. The access key is PLA. Students are
assigned by the computer, an Applicant Identification Number called AIN.

The Austin Leaders of Tomorrow Program is held bi-monthly at McCallum High School 9am-12pm, 5600 Sunshine Drive, 78756.

The mission of the LOT program is to expand the cadre of African-American and minority students who enter college.

Through bi-monthly workshops the program seeks to provide the students with the tools necessary to be successful in their collegiate endeavors.

For over a decade, the National Black MBA has sponsored the Leaders of Tomorrow Program, this successful program has provided a positive influence to high school.

Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT), is a national network of high school students and MBA professionals who focus on student empowerment. The program was first implemented in Memphis in 1999. Roughly 20 metro area high school students called “Leaders” have the opportunity to interact with outstanding business leaders from the local area and all over the world. Mentors guide the students through a challenging program designed to help them develop the skills and attitudes necessary for success. Leaders participate in a variety of activities, workshops, and events that emphasize growth in the following areas:

Community Service
Securing Internships and Scholarships
Goal Setting and Attainment

National Black MBA Association Austin Chapter of the NBMBAA strives to lead in the creation of intellectual and economic wealth
in the African American business community in Central Texas.

KATHY BURRELL AND BILL LOUDEN SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING AND COMPLETING GOALS.

The Leaders of Tomorrow students successfully prepared for months under challenging academic workloads to produce
their master piece for judges, mentors, family, friends and host of others who filled the room at the University of Phoenix-Mopac.
The kids performed wonderfully and used numerous creative means in illustrating and explaining their SWOT analysis.
Ultimately the competition resulted in a very closely matched outcome between 5 teams ranging from 2 to 5 students per team.
The 1st Place Winners Received Trophies and Gift Certificates!!!
All student received LOT Case Study Certificates of Completion.

Texas Governor's School in Arts and Humanities for Urban Leadership at Texas A&M University
The Texas Governor's School in Arts and Humanities for Urban Leadership at Texas A&M University in College Station is a three-week intensive residential summer educational program, open to all qualified high-achieving Texas public high school students who will be in 11th or 12th grade in the 2009-2010 school year. The program will intentionally seek a diverse pool of applicants from every educational service center in the State of Texas. Applicants selected to attend the Governor's School will include female and malestudents from all racial, ethnic, cultural, social economic, linguistic, geographic, and gender groups. Every effort will be made to accommodate for students with special needs.

2008 DISEASE DETECTIVE SUMMER CAMP

2008 CDC Disease Detective Campers The National Center for Health Marketing's Global Health Odyssey Museum is pleased to offer the 2009 CDC Disease Detective Camp (DDC). DDC is an academic day camp for students who will be high school juniors and seniors during the 2009-2010 school year. Over the course of a week, campers will take on the roles of disease detectives and learn how CDC safeguards the nation’s health. Activities vary by day and may include short lectures by CDC experts, a mock press conference in the CDC press room, a look behind the scenes of CDC, and other hands-on activities. Campers will learn the methodologies used to track diseases in populations, basic lab procedures used in an infectious disease lab, and how public health research is applied at CDC.

The CDC Disease Detective Camp will be offered twice during the summer of 2009: June 22-26 and July 13-17. Both sessions will offer the same activities and will last from 8:45AM – 4:00PM. There is no cost associated with attending the camp, but each camper is responsible for bringing or buying his/her lunch. The deadline for applications is April 20, 2009. PROJECT IDENTITY is a federally funded program designed to stimulate interest in college attendance and the awareness of college entrance requirements for African-American and other minority males attending middle school. The Project aims to help to develop and sustain the capacity of middle schools to prepare these young boys for high school and post-secondary education. By providing a network of support, particularly for the adults who influence middle school students, specifically, their counselors and families, Project Identity strives to channel and direct more minority males to higher education. Project Identity will give special attention to boys from backgrounds and communities that historically have not encouraged large numbers to pursue, enroll and succeed in post-secondary education.
OUR VISION
The vision of Project Identity is to expose middle school male students to the best academic resources and cultural activities so that learning becomes a source of inspiration to not only pursue the college option but to do so with enthusiasm and vigor. By assisting both parents and school counselors, Project Identity will create a learning environment for participants that extends beyond the classroom.

The Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program is a high school mentoring program founded in September 1991 during the 13th Annual National Black MBA Association Conference and Exposition in New York City. This program, sponsored by Mar’s Incorporated, has helped to expand the overall number of minority leaders in corporate America by providing mentor/leader relationships with business executives and high school students within the community.

The Leaders of Tomorrow program specifically targets high school students by providing seminars, networking, and social opportunities for high school students.
The Austin Chapter - Leaders of Tomorrow program is focused on supporting the overall mission of the National Black MBA Association, while providing high school
students with professional mentors throughout Austin, Texas and surrounding areas.

Everyday Miracle Worker

University Faculty Member Shares Extensive Knowledge from Africa to US From Cameroon, West Africa, to Austin, Texas, Dr. Wawa Ngenge, Chair of the John Sperling School of Business Graduate Programs and of the College of Information Systems and Technology at the University's Austin Campus, is a miracle worker of sorts. He finds ways to bring people together, enhance diversity, and develop programs to improve their economic, social, and educational status—whether those individuals hail from continents as diverse as Africa or from the United States.
Prior to joining the faculty at University of Phoenix, Ngenge served in various capacities with the Government of Cameroon in its Ministry of Agriculture. He was responsible for researching and creating policies that supported all agricultural and rural development in Cameroon.
"I worked with international agencies such as the World Bank, World Food Program and other foreign governments to build relationships and survey and process data using real-world knowledge to enhance agricultural and other types of development policies in Cameroon," he said.
Later, as a staff member of the United Nations Development Program in Cameroon and a consultant for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ngenge helped initiate projects to bring Internet technology into schools throughout Africa through SchoolNet Africa where he was a founding board member.
"The Internet was a new thing in the 1990s, and I shared research and information with governments, non-profit organizations, businesses, as well as schools, to show them that by increasing access to information through the Internet, they would greatly improve their overall operational success and make better decisions about development," Ngenge said. "Through SchoolNet Africa, we reached out to 25 different countries to bring computers and Internet technology into the schools; I am very proud of that accomplishment."
Ngenge found the transition from Africa and his work in technology there, to the United Sates and University of Phoenix, a seamless one.
"University of Phoenix intrigued me because of its use of extensive computer technology," he said. "The University was doing things with technology that no one else, to my knowledge, was doing, and I wanted to be a part of that."
Fortunately for University of Phoenix – Austin, Ngenge moved to the area and began doing what he had done for decades in West Africa—bringing people together and creating programs to benefit education.
As a lifetime member of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA, http://austinblackmba.org), he helped launch the local Austin chapter's Leaders of Tomorrow program, a leadership training and mentorship program in which Chapter members, University faculty, students, employees, and other volunteers reach out to minority high school students to assist with their socialization, academic and leadership skills.
"Through this program, we are able to share information about a quality university education, professional development, and career management with underserved population groups," Ngenge said. "These students have leadership qualities, but may need additional motivation and mentoring to reach their full potential."
In its inaugural year in 2008, the Leaders of Tomorrow group already had 18 students involved, one of whom was selected for a national leadership training program in Washington, D.C. The program also organized a College and Career Expo that attracted 50 students and their parents, at which the program awarded five college scholarships to high school students from the area. Now in its second year, the program has 30 active students whose futures look brighter because of their participation in the program.
"The partnership between University of Phoenix and the National Black MBA Association is a perfect fit because we can work together to help these students realize their fullest potential and become our future leaders within the community," Ngenge said.
